Education and training in the literary translation of Buddhist texts
Founded according to the wishes and advice of Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche, Dharma Sagar is a Tibetan translation training program that joins the tradition of translation started in Tibet at Samye Monastery with modern pedagogy in an effort to produce translators of the highest caliber.
Our apprentices study dharma directly in Tibetan, enabling them to both understand the original text and discuss it with Tibetan-speaking scholars. They translate together with Tibetan scholars just like the Tibetan lotsawas (translators) and Indian panditas (scholars) who at Lotsaling (Place of Translation) at Samye produced translations relied upon for 1,000 years and counting. And they take personalized writing and textual analysis classes in their native language to ensure that their translations are not only accurate, but also reflect the literary qualities of the original.
